After installing CS3, I promptly ran Adobe Updater. It ran for about 1 hour and downloaded several hundred megabytes in updates but it froze during the installation. The progress bar kept returning to a certain point, looping endlessly and never finishing the update.
Searching the Adobe Forums resulted in several good-intentioned but misguided results. What worked for me was really simple: deleting the Adobe Updater update files.
Follow these baby steps:
- Open any CS3 program
- Go to Help » Updates
- After it checks for updates, go to Preferences and look up the File Location - mine was "C:\Users\Leo\AppData\Local\Adobe\Updater5\Install" in Windows. I don't know where that would be on a Mac
- Delete everything in the Install folder
- Run the update again. It will give an error message saying it couldn't update whatever program it was trying to update before. Just cancel it and download all the files again.

I too am having this problem. I was afraid I would have to reinstall everything all over again. I'll give this fix a try.
Thanks!
Uh, didn't work for me. Sorry.
